November 11th 2018: Veteran's Day, Armistice Day

posted Nov 25, 2018, 11:36 AM by AUC France   [ updated Nov 25, 2018, 11:40 AM ]

AUC France has layed a wreath and participating in the ceremonies on Armistice Day,  honoring those fallen and the Centennial of the end of WWI.

American University Clubs of France participated in the solemn and moving Centennial Ceremony at the American Military Cemetery in Suresnes on November 11th in the presence of President Trump and dignitaries from the United States and France who had come to pay homage to the sacrifices of the fallen during World War I. President Trump mentioned the 116,000 American servicemen who gave their lives during this terrible war as well as 26,000 soldiers who died during just one battle on one day at Meuse-Argonne.  There are over 1500 graves in this cemetery.

After the ceremony, a wreath from the American University Clubs of France was laid on the grave of Lt. Albert MacDonnell, 22 years old, who had graduated from the University of Texas at Austin's Engineering School in 1912.    He was First Lieutenant and served as an Aide to Major General William H. Johnston, Commander of the 91st Division United States Army.  The University of Texas at Austin is a member of AUC France.

Lt. MacDonnell was wounded in a German bombardment west of the Meuse River and died in the hospital on December 22nd, 1918 after the Armistice from complications as a result of his wounds. His great-uncle Thomas Sneed, was Mayor of Austin, Texas.

Anna Marie Mattson, Treasurer of AUC France was a flag bearer during the ceremony because of her two uncles, Jake and Cloyd Stevens from Pennsylvania who both fought in France during World War I.
